Homeopathy in the Covid-19 Pandemic: Opportunities, Challenges and the Road Ahead

Drs. Raj K. Manchanda and Meeta Gupta discuss homeopathy in the covid-19 pandemic, including its potential, historical successes and current research needed to identify remedies for prevention and treatment.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a new disease and no proven preventive and treatment modalities are available, even in homeopathy. Homeopathic medicines, based on the unique symptoms of the patient and the general features of the disease have been used in preventing and managing diseases in the past, irrespective of their causative organism.

There is a globally coordinated effort to obtain experience and identify the homeopathic remedies that are most promising in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19 related symptoms.

An effective, evidence-based, multidisciplinary strategy needs to be put in place to investigate homeopathic drugs for this pandemic and to validate their indications.  This will be conveyed to practitioners for wide application, to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

Also, new homoeopathic drugs may be prepared from the biological material and immunological signalling molecules specific to COVID-19, followed by safety and clinical trials.

Mumbai: Ghatkopar corporator distributes homeopathy medicine for Covid-19

MUMBAI: In its first kind the BJP Corporator from Ghatkopar has started distributing free homeopathy preventive medicine for Covid-19 to the residents of the locality.

There are debates in the medical fraternity about the Ayush Ministry’s claim over the use of Arsenic Album 30 as preventive medicine to boost immunity, several people in India have already started consuming these tablets amid the ongoing corona virus pandemic.

On Sunday Ghatkopar corporator Praveen Chedda’s team organised a camp at Mahatma Gandhi road at Ghatkopar and distributed tiny bottles of homeopathy medicine-Arsenic ALB 30).

"My team has put a mandal in Ghatkopar and are distributing the preventive homeopathy tablets under the Seva Setu scheme. As there is steep rise in the Covid-19 cases in Ghatkopar and hence I have decided to distribute these tablets which are meant to strengthen one’s immunity," said Chedda.

Chedda said that on Sunday alone his team distributed around 2,000 bottles of Arsenic ALB 30 and they good response to the. "Several people particularly housing societies have approached us and are registering their names and taking these government approved tablets. Each adult has to take four pills per day for three days empty stomach and children below 12 years have to take two pills. My target is to distribute around 25,000 bottles. I think that state should freely distribute this tablets all over Mumbai after all these are homeopathy tablets it will benefit and will not have any side effects."

The Ghatkopar N ward has so far reported 620 positive cases and Tilak Nagar resident in Ghatkopar was the first patient from Mumbai to had succumbed to the Covi in March.

Covid-19: Maharashtra police told to take 2 homeopathy medicines for immunity

The Maharashtra police has procured two homeopathy medicines, namely Arsenicum Album 30 and Camphora 1m, for its more than two lakh employees and their families. The police stated, "These medicines are shown to boost immunity...We have had good results in Pune. The number of infections is lesser than expected."

With the number of COVID-19 cases in its ranks crossing the 1,000 mark, the Maharashtra Police are providing Camphora 1m, a homoeopathic immunity booster, to all its personnel.

On Tuesday, an assistant sub-inspector posted with a police station in eastern Mumbai, became the latest victim, taking the death toll in the city to five and in the State to nine. The development came even as the Mumbai Police were celebrating the successful recovery of three personnel in a day.

The police said the move was just a preventive measure and acknowledged the lack of clinical studies to prove that homoeopathic medicines keep the novel Coronavirus at bay.

‘Just an alternative’

Police officials said the booster was an alternative to Arsenicum Album 30, another homoeopathic prophylatic given to personnel and staff of other government departments on the recommendation of the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH).

So far, 1,007 police personnel have tested positive. Additional Director General (planning and coordination) S. Jagannathan issued a circular on Monday describing the detailed dosage for Camphora 1m, including for children below five years.

The circular directed all unit heads to inform the Stapolice headquarters by Wednesday the quantity of drug their personnel require.

‘No side effects’

Mr. Jagannathan said, “We need to be clear that Camphora 1m is being recommended as a prophylactic in consultation with homoeopathy experts. Strictly speaking, there is no statistically validated study regarding homoeopathic medicines. But it is a fact that they do not have side effects. The experts we consulted have said these medicines can be taken even if other allopathic treatment is under way.”

The State Reserve Police Force’s Unit 1 in Pune will distribute the drug, while an officer in the Director General’s office will handle queries on the initiative.

Mr. Jagannathan said, “There have been a lot of reports about which drug is more effective between Arsenicum Album 30 and Camphora 1m. The circular only offers options to our personnel as neither medicine has adverse effects. In the next phase, we will be providing a list of homoeopathy experts in the State our personnel can consult to clarify their doubts on the dosage.”

Practitioners of homeopathy seek trials to establish its efficacy against COVID-19

Leading practitioners of homeopathy have called for medicines of the branch to be tested for COVID-19.
The practitioners argue that with the medical community giving a trial to drugs such as remdisivir or HCQ, it is only fair that homeopathy be given a chance.

eading practitioners of homeopathy, such as Rajan Sankaran, have called for medicines of the branch, including drugs such as Camphora and Arsenic Album, to be tested for COVID-19.

If efficacy is proven, said Sankaran, the medication can be added officially as an adjunct therapy, standalone treatment or prophylactic (treatment to prevent disease).

The practitioners argue that with the medical community giving a trial to drugs such as remdisivir or HCQ, which are yet to be proven, it is only fair that homeopathy be given a chance.

Further, they sought trials in a control group preferably with standalone use of homeopathy to ensure there is no room for error to assess the effectiveness.

In a bid to use age-old therapies against COVID-19, the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation or the CDSCO earlier this month issued a notification allowing practitioners of alternate therapies such as homeopathy and Ayurveda to conduct research on COVID-19 patients in quarantine centres.

The Ayush ministry has also given its go-ahead to conduct a clinical trial on four Ayurvedic medicines against COVID-19. The clinical trial will assess the use of four ayurvedic drugs Ashwagandha, Yashtimadu, Guduchi peepli and Ayush-64 as a preventive and as an add-on to standard care for COVID-19 treatment.

There has been an increase in talk about the potential of homeopathic formulations as a prophylaxis against COVID-19. It got a boost after Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj, a strong proponent of homeopathy, advocated use of medicines such as Camphor 1M 4 pills, twice a day for two days against COVID-19.

The Ayush Ministry also notified that Arsenic Alb 30 homeopathy medicine can be used as preventive treatment against COVID-19. The ministry suggested consumption of the medicine for three days on an empty stomach, adding that the dose should be repeated after one month in case COVID-19 is present in the community.

Homeopathy has also seen adoption in other parts of the world during the COVID-19 crisis. The Cuban government distributed homeopathy medicines to vulnerable people. In Brazil, authorities of cities such as Itajai and Rio do Sul gave Camphora 1M to more than a million people as a preventive measure.

There are examples closer home too. The Kerala government is said to have distributed over 4 million vials of homeopathic medicines as a preventive medication.

Other examples include Pune where the police commissioner K Venkatesham said homeopathic medicine was distributed to the force. He added that among the 9,000 policemen who got the medicine, the incidence of the disease was a bare minimum even after six weeks. People who have closely watched this development agree with this observation.

With the number of COVID-19 cases in its ranks crossing the 1,000 mark, the Maharashtra Police is now providing Camphora 1M to all its personnel. According to reports, the Punjab government, too, has administered homeopathy medicine to frontline COVID-19 workers such as the police.

Whilst anecdotal data seems to be stacking up in favour of homeopathy, allopathic doctors are not taken in by the idea, with key officials on the COVID-19 task force warning there is little scientific evidence to suggest homeopathic medicines work.

They argue that currently over 75 percent patients are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and get cured on their own. In such cases, if homeopathy is administered, it can get mistaken as effective. They warn that no medication should be followed without ICMR guidelines.

But homeopaths are confident that rigorous trials will prove their case, and say theirs is a recognised system of medicine and is used the world over.

Further, they argue that the right to access homeopathy as a preferred choice of treatment for COVID-19 should be left to the patient, as it is with other medical conditions.

Maharashtra: State police tells personnel to take two homeopathy medicines as preventive

Personnel posted in areas with high incidence of infections have been advised to take one dose of four pellets daily for four to five days, while those with symptoms of Covid-19 have been advised to consult doctors for the correct dosage. The advisory added that Camphor 1m is also safe for children.

With the number of police personnel in the state testing positive for Covid-19 rising every day, the Maharashtra Police has advised its personnel to take homeopathy medicines as a preventive measure. As on Wednesday, 925 police personnel have tested positive for the virus, with 793 of them yet to recover. Eight policemen succummed.

The state police force has procured Arsenicum Album 30 and Camphor 1m for more than two lakh of its employees and their families. “Both these medicines are shown to boost immunity. Many other states have also prescribed these medicines for their frontline workers,” said S Jagannathan, Additional Director General of Police (Planning and Coordination).

But even as he described these medicines as an “immunity booster”, in an advisory issued on Monday, Jagannathan had said that as “a preventive measure”, four pellets of Camphor 1m are to be taken twice a day for two days on an empty stomach. The dose is to be repeated a month later.

Personnel posted in areas with high incidence of infections have been advised to take one dose of four pellets daily for four to five days, while those with symptoms of Covid-19 have been advised to consult doctors for the correct dosage. The advisory added that Camphor 1m is also safe for children.

“We have recommended that our people take either of the two medicines. These do not have any side-effects and one vial is enough for a whole family. These can also be taken along with allopathic medicines,” said Jagannathan.

He added that the police commissioners of Pune and Navi Mumbai had distributed the medicines for their men and women on the frontlines soon after the Union Ministry of Ayush advised their use in March. “We need our men and women to have strong immunity. We have had good results in Pune. The number of infections is lesser than expected,” said Jagannathan.

The highest number of infected police personnel are in Mumbai. The city police has already distributed Hdroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, among its personnel.

When it came to the number of infections, Mumbai is followed by Group XII of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) in Hingoli. The SRPF men are suspected to have been infected while on bandobast duty in Mumbai. Infections have also been reported in the police force in Malegaon, Thane City, Pune City, Solapur City, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Railway Police, Thane Rural, Jalgaon and Nandurbar.

Jagannathan said that Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj has sponsored the manufacture of the medicines for the state police. “We had to ensure that strict quality control is maintained during production. The medicines are being made at a unit in Pune. We expect to send the medicines to each police unit in the state in three to four days,” he added.

Aurangabad police distribute homeopathy immunity boosters to personnel & families

Aurangabad: The city police has procured a homeopathy medicine, believed to boost immunity, in bulk quantities for distribution among its personnel who have been given the reponsibility of keeping a check on unruly citizens venturing out amid the lockdown.

The medicine has been purchased not only for the police personnel, but also for their family members.
Authorities said the medicine, which goes by the name of Arsenicum Album 30C, is one of the immunity boosters most recommended by homeopathy practitioners. The medicine has already been distributed among tha families of many personnel.

While being handed over the medicine, each cops istold how the medicine helps in boosting immunity. The personnel are also being asked to maintain social distancing and wash hands at regular intervals.

Those posted at the police stations will get the medicine from the in-charge. For those posted at the headquarters, the medicines will be given by the officers there.

Commissioner of police Chiranjeev Prasad told TOI, “Apart from taking the precautionary measures, boosting immunity remains one of the most vital ways of fighting this deadly infection.”

“We had placed a bulk order and got over 3,500 medicine bottles, enough for supplying to each of the police families. The distribution has already started. We have recommended that each family member should have four pills on an empty stomach every morning for three consecutive days,” said Prasad.

Police said that they had studied the cases of those who have been infected by Covid-19 and have also recovered. While studying the cases, they found that those with better immunity turned out to be the survivors.

A deputy commissioner of police, who was part of the procurement process, said, “We took the decision of obtaining the homeopathy medicine after reading a series of news about Covid-19 survivors and also speaking to health experts.”

The large quantity of medicine was procured with the help of a city-based homeopathy college, said the officer.

Echoing the police chief, homeopathy practitioner Vilas Jagdale said, “This medicine is known for boosting immunity. With no established medicine for treating Covid-19 positive patients, boosting immunity remains a key in fighting the infection.”

Opt for homeopathy medicine: DG office, Aurangabad

AURANGABAD: The director general of police’s office has issued an internal circular asking all the policemen to opt for the prescribed homoeopathy medicine for prevention as well as treatment of Covid-19.
The circular has come at a time when high number of policemen are getting infected with Covid-19 in the state. At the same time, state health machinery has began treating Covid-19 patients with allopathy medication.
While asking the policemen to go for homoeopathy medication, the state police headquarters has asked all the commissioners and superintendents of police to record the effectiveness of the medication on Covid-19 positive policemen, symptomatic or asymptomatic, and update the DGP office about the same.

As per the instructions issued earlier this week by additional director general of police S Jagannathan, the state police are trying their best to bring a check on the spread of Covid-19. However, while performing their duties, policemen and officers are found getting infected with the virus.

So as to prevent the policemen and officers from getting infected, homoeopathy medicine ‘Arsenicum Album 30’ is being supplied. Similarly, ‘Camphor 1m’ homoeopathy medicine will be provided by the state police headquarters.

Citing that the instructions of the doctors for boosting the immunity, the circular states that four pills of Camphor 1m should be consumed twice for two days on empty stomach and avoid consuming anything except water for 30 minutes after consuming of pills.

Tuberculinum aviare-The avian mycobacterium- An Integrated Perspective And Its Scope In the Treatment Of COVID-19 Disease

    By
Tuberculinum Aviare is prepared from Mycobacterium Avium. In 1895 Dr. Cartier reports treating cases presenting like influenza but which had grave symptoms and suspicious cough, successfully treated with Tuberculinum Aviare. Anshutz in “New, Old and Forgotten Remedies” summarizes anecdotal cases of influenzal bronchitis effectively treated by Tuberculinum Aviare. Influenzal bronchitis is accompanied by an incessant cough and by grave general symptoms. There is more frequently acute than passive, obstructive and dyspneic congestion. It is a remedy of long-lasting action, capable in certain cases of modifying the organism, and of bracing a constitution which has become enfeebled from the effects of influenza. It is suitable for complicated respiratory viral diseases like influenza and measles. C.E. Whiiler in 1957, finds Tuberculinum Av of real value as a prophylactic for this susceptibility to germs of catarrh especially when continuous infection is prevalent for people constantly exposed to it. In contemporary literature Hypersensitive Pneumonitis caused by Mycobacterium Avium- “hot-lung disease”- has striking similarities with COVID19 including ground-glass opacities on CT scan. In-vitro experiments have found cells infected with mycobacterium avium showing resistance to influenza infection. In Passerines, an inverse relationship between the prevalence of M. avium infection and Avian influenza viruses is observed while the co-infection with both organisms in a single bird is rare. These observations and the striking similarity between Mycobacterium Avium Disease and COVID19, lead us to hypothesize that Mycobacterium Avium (Tuberculinum Aviare) is homoeopathically indicated and has a scope in treating critical cases of COVID19, and also to examine and test the scope of this remedy as a prophylaxis and to initiate in-vitro studies and vaccine-related research co-using mycobacterium-avium.

ROLE OF HOMOEOPATHY IN COVID-19 MANAGEMENT-A CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research 9(5):2459-66

Coronavirus disease also termed as COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection has been declared as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The COVID-19 infection has emerged as a global health emergency spreading over 210 countries and territories around the world as there are no specific established treatments or vaccines available to date. In such a crisis, prevention of the further spread of the infection is the best possible containment approach being advocated by WHO and other health agencies. A vast clinical experience does exist for the immune-boosting effect of Homoeopathic medicines and its role in the prevention of viral infection. The Genus Epidemicus has been used during various disease outbreaks for preventing the spread of diseases like Cholera, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, and Dengue Fever, etc. with good results. Given the clinical success in those severe infectious diseases, Homoeopathy as an adjuvant to the standard of care should be evaluated for the management of COVID-19. The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) have suggested the use of Arsenicum album - 30 for its possible role in preventing COVID-19 infection. Following the same, we had prescribed the Arsenicum album - 30 to our patients, and our clinical experience is shared here. When there is no or very limited evidence is available for the effectiveness of Homoeopathy, this publication is expected to assist the identification of a better treatment approach and guide further research.

Why Do We Urgently Need Corona Nosode?

Here comes a rationale, scientific logic, and the vision behind why do we urgently need a Corona Nosode.

Corona Nosode could be a potential game-changer for the anti-microbial treatments that we have today and in the future. After all the scientific scrutiny and studies, a category of Nosodes may bring a new ray of hope in our struggle to fight COVID19 and such other challenges.

The term Nosode, apparently new to many, is a 150+-year-old phrase. I call Nosodes cousins of Vaccines! In the coming time, Nosode will be a modern lingo.

It is up to the scientists, governments, policymakers, researchers, and the pharma, to decide what do they want to do with this unprecedented opportunity.

I am happy to share that with teams of scientists, we have been working on scientifically developing Corona Nosodes for over two months.

Please feel free to share this video and the post. If you want this video on mobile through WhatsApp, please write to me.

The Maharashtra Government, on Wednesday, set up an 18-member task force headed by Dr Tatyarao Lahane, director of Medical Education and Research, to suggest the application of Ayurved, Homeopathy, Unani and Yoga envisaged by the Ministry of AYUSH to treat asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients of CoVID-19. The task force will examine the application of Ayurved, Homeopathy, Unani and Yoga Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Goa and make its recommendations.
The government, in the notification issued on Wednesday, said that the Ministry of AYUSH has recommended self-care guidelines to boost immunity with special reference to respiratory health. These are supported by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications.
The establishment of a task force with a mandate to study the application of Ayurved, Homeopathy, Unani and Yoga came when the COVID-19 cases crossed the 25,000 mark and surged to 25,922 with 975 deaths in the state. So far, 5,547 have been discharged.
The measures suggested by the Ministry of AYUSH include drinking of warm water throughout the day and daily practice of Yoga for at least 30 minutes.

BMC proposes homeopathy medicine as preventive post Ayush advisory, state NHM says yet to decide

The Ayush ministry had first recommended it controversially in January 29 as a prophylactic against Covid-19, shooting up its demand across the country. The advisory had recommended one dose of Arsenicum Album 30 for three days in a row on an empty stomach.

Days after the BMC issued a circular stating that homeopathic medicine Arsenicum Album 30 is a “preventive medication” for Covid-19 – following an advisory by the Ayush ministry – and allowed its use for high-risk contacts at quarantine facilities in G South and K West wards, the Maharashtra National Health Mission said on Tuesday that it is yet to take a call on the Union ministry directive. On May 8, BMC had said it will distribute Arsenicum Album 30, commonly used for respiratory tract infections and flu, for free in the quarantine facilities. There is, however, no scientific evidence that it can help in the treatment or prevention of Covid-19. The Ayush ministry had first recommended it controversially in January 29 as a prophylactic against Covid-19, shooting up its demand across the country. The advisory had recommended one dose of Arsenicum Album 30 for three days in a row on an empty stomach.
However, Anup Kumar Yadav, Director of Maharashtra National Health Mission, said, “We have formed a task force to decide on the Ayush protocols.” An official from the state public health ministry added that no advisory has been issued by the government to use Arsenicum Album 30 as a preventive medicine for the general population. The BMC circular had stated that it would start distributing the medicine at G North (Worli) and K West (Andheri) wards, which have reported the highest number of cases in the city, as a preventive medication. It also quoted the Ayush ministry saying that the medicine has been found to be beneficial. Since then, in Mumbai, the cost of a bottle of Arsenicum Album 30 has gone up from Rs 20 to 30 to Rs 50 with homeopathic doctors contacting housing societies to sell the medicine.
BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani confirmed that the medicine is being administered as a preventive to Covid-19. “We are using this as a preventive medication in two high-risk wards. This decision was taken on the basis of the Ayush ministry’s notification,” he said. However, Dr Padmaja Keskar, BMC’s executive health officer, said, “We are using this medicine only as immunity booster in quarantine centres. Later, we will use in containment zones and also give to the general population.” “It is worrying that this medicine is being administered as a prophylactic in the absence of any scientific evidence. People are panicking and will try anything that government propagates. They may develop a false sense of security after taking In Malad, Andheri and Worli, private homeopathic practitioners are using the BMC circular to sell the medicine. At Veera Desai in Andheri West, homeopath Priyam Sharma is selling the medicine to over 100 people a day, at a cost of Rs 30. Letters from her clinic encouraging people to buy Arsenicum Album 30 as a preventive medicine have been pasted in housing societies. In Malad, homeopath Dr Arshi Tank said she is selling over 1,000 bottles a day. “I have approached housing societies to distribute this medicine. I am maintaining details of each person, after a month, I will check their susceptibility to the infection. I will compile the data to measure its efficacy.” Dr Gulnar Khan, medical officer in Andheri West, said they have neither authorised any private homeopathy doctor to sell the medicine on behalf of BMC nor advised the general public to take it. While Kerala and Andhra Pradesh have been giving the medicine to Covid-19 patients, Rajasthan has advised it as an immunity booster. The medicine contains diluted arsenic, and is not known to have any side effects.

Haldi, homeo mantra to boost CRPF jawans’ immunity

Sanjay Sahay | TNN | May 13, 2020, 06:00 IST

Ranchi:
Though the efficacy of homeopathy and ayurveda is yet to be tested in treating Covid-19, CRPF in Jharkhand has made certain additions to the daily diet of their jawans using alternate medicine to boost their immunity after receiving guidelines from the Union ministry of Ayush.
CRPF IG (Jharkhand-Bihar region) Rajkumar said, “We are now providing turmeric milk and chyavanprash to all our personnel twice a day. Provisions for warm water and herbal drinks have also been made at every company’s location. We also encourage the jawans to practice yoga and meditation.”
He said homeopathy medicines like Arsenic Album and Camphora have also been distributed among the personnel in both the states to boost immunity.
According to the ministry guidelines, 10gm chyawanprash in the morning, herbal tea or kadha and turmeric milk help in boosting immunity. Around 22,000 CRPF personnel are engaged primarily in anti-extremist operations at 112 locations across the state. In Ranchi, two companies of the paramilitary force are deployed in Hindpiri and other localities to ensure lockdown norms are followed.
Rajkumar said, “CRPF personnel are on the frontline in the battle against the virus in Jharkhand and a part of the force has also been posted in Hindpiri, a containment zone. We are also engaged in anti-extremist operations in rural areas where a large number of migrants are returning from all over the country. We have to ensure that the immunity levels of our jawans remain high.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to people of the nation to follow Ayush ministry's directions to boost immunity. He added that CRPFF has not deployed jawans above 50 years of age and those with health issues on Covid duty in the state. Jharkhand Police had issued a similar order on Monday advising all district police chiefs to not engage personnel above 50 and those suffering from heart ailments, asthma, kidney-related illnesses or other serious diseases for Covid-19 duty at hot spots, containment zones, hospitals and quarantine centres.

Given the fact that Mumbai can take all the help it needs from doctors and medical professionals right now, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has said that it is looking to bring doctors who practice alternate medicine like Ayurveda and Homeopathy into civic-run COVID-19 hospitals to monitor and supervise patients.
It is said that the BMC has already commissioned 17 homeopathic doctors and six ayurvedic doctors at the Seven Hills hospital in Marol.  This hospital is one of the designated COVID-19 health institutions in the region. Additionally, around 45 doctors from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Science, Wardha will join Seven Hills hospital on Tuesday.
Additional Municipal Commissioner of the BMC, Suresh Kakani said - “Ayurveda doctors can work in quarantine centres, where patients need very little treatment and are mostly there for supervision. Also, most alternate medicine practitioners have already been trained in Covid management. The treatment protocol is set too.”

They can use their services as and when they need,” he added. Additionally, around 2,100 independent doctors have reportedly answered the call to work for civic hospitals in the city, while a total of 11,500 doctors have reportedly filled the forms. Filling of forms was made mandatory by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER). Exemptions are provided for those aged 55+ and have co-morbidities. It is said that out of the 2,100 doctors that have shown willingness to work in civic hospitals, 1,400 are specialists. “Of this (11,500), 2,100 have shown willingness to work at civic hospitals. Of the rest, several said that they were already working on nonCovid services and hence were unavailable,” said Dr. TP Lahane, head of the DMER.

RANCHI:

With allopathy is using trial and error method in some cases to treat Covid-19, doctors of alternative medicines feel they should be given a chance to prove the efficacy of their treatment. Though the homeopathy association in the state has decided to distribute two lakh doses of Arsenic-30, believed to be an immunity booster, the state government is yet to decide on allowing this field of medicine and a research on homeopathy for treatment of Covid-19.
A homeopathy practitioner on Kanke Road, Dr P K Choudhury, said, “Homeopathy has a variety of medicines for patients. Practitioners of homeopathy analyse a patient’s disorders in detail before giving medicines which proves to be more effective.” He added, “We should be given a chance on an experimental basis to treat Covid-19 cases as homeopathy has a very unique way of treating patients on a case-to-case basis.”
Meanwhile, ayurvedic doctors are also eyeing an opportunity to treat patients affected by the virus. The ministry of Ayush has decided to research on coronavirus and the effectiveness of ashwagandha on patients along with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and a few doctors of the branch of medicine are confident about positive results on Covid-19 patients. Padmanabhan Pandey, an aryuvedic doctor at Daksha Ayurveda, said he had written a letter to the senior authorities regarding permission to treat Covid-19 patients, but was denied. He said, “Allopathy is also treating patients on a trial and error method, so why cannot we be given a chance? We have giloy, ashwagandha and other medicines which can yield positive results.” He added, “Most of the people think ayurveda is all about herbs, but we also have different types of minerals which can be very good for patients and can assure recovery. We have mixtures of natural medicinal herbs and minerals like Jai Mangal Ras and Tribhuvan Kirti Ras.” Ayurveda doctors also prescribed turmeric milk and application of mustard oil in the nasal and naval cavities to limit the possibility of infection. Dr Hari Kumar of Kerala Ayurveda said, “Treatment of Covid-19 is under experiment, but we can go for citrus fruits and turmeric in milk to boost immunity. Body massages are also great way to boost immunity.”
